October Transport Month Launch
The Department of Transport in conjunction with its Transport entities and the City of Ekurhuleni officially launched the 2017 October Transport Month (OTM) on Friday, 29 September 2017 at the Sinaba Stadium, Daveyton.
October Transport Month (OTM) was endorsed in 2005 by Cabinet after a Transport Lekgotla. This annual campaign supported by the Transport entities and municipalities is in its twelfth year of implementation in October 2017.
Minister of Transport Joe Maswanganyi was joined by the Deputy Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga, Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Cllr Mzwandile Masina, Transport and Safety MECs, Acting DG of the Department of Transport Mr Mathabatha Mokonyama together with other Transport stakeholders.
Minister Maswanganyi and his delegation commenced the festivities by leading a Law Enforcement operation on the N12. During his keynote address, he reiterated government’s commitment in ensuring an effective and efficient transport system was provided across the country.
This year’s Transport Month is hosted under the theme: “Together we move South Africa Forward.” The Department in collaboration with its entities also hosted exhibitions during the launch to share service offerings within the transport sector with the community of Daveyton and the surrounding East Rand Townships.
The 2017 OTM campaign has been implemented during the OR Tambo Centenary Celebrations, with the main event taking place in Mbizana, formerly known as Bizana on 27 October 2017.
The OTM campaign’s purpose is to showcase transport infrastructure services delivered in all modes of transport namely: Aviation; Maritime; Public Transport and Roads. It is also utilised to highlight key achievements and opportunities within the Transport sector.
Road safety initiatives are also intensified during transport month as part of the 365 days road safety programme rolled out by the department of transport and its entities.
