Education and Learner Support CSR Project 2024 - KZN
The RTMC partnered with the National Department of Transport to address the needs of disadvantaged households in rural and farming communities across four identified villages: Nquthu, Koopleegte, Mahlabathini, and Vulindlela in Escourt, KwaZulu-Natal. Together with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, the RTMC distributed festive season care hampers to 200 beneficiaries in need of support. The recipients included child-headed households, children who lost parents or guardians in road crashes, the indigent, and the elderly who rely on social grants.
The RTMC utilised this project to reach communities most affected by social challenges. By providing grocery care hampers to indigent and child-headed households, the initiative aimed to alleviate the burden faced by these families. Additionally, the project handover enabled the Department of Transport and the RTMC to engage with the communities on critical road safety issues. This engagement included discussions on the impact of road crashes on families, pedestrians, and vulnerable road users, as well as the associated economic burden during the period of increased road travel in the festive season.
Education and Learner Support CSR Project 2024 - Sharpeville
The Education and Learner CSR Programme addresses the needs of disadvantaged learners and schools impacted by poverty, crime, and unemployment, in alignment with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of No Poverty and Zero Hunger. This programme also focuses on providing road safety education through charitable efforts and activations.
The project benefited learners at Ntsele Primary School in Evaton and Matsie Steyn Primary School in Sharpeville, both of which serve as beacons of hope in communities burdened by crime, unemployment, and poverty. Beneficiaries included 212 girls and 203 boys from Grade 6 and 7 classes at both schools, ensuring no gender was left behind.
During visits to these schools, the RTMC donated dignity care hampers to uplift the learners' confidence and self-esteem by promoting good hygiene and healthy living. These feminine and dignity care hampers were distributed equally to the identified young girls and boys. The donation aligned with SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and 5 (Gender Equality), aiming to end poverty, promote good health, and fight for gender equality.
Additionally, the handover event provided a platform to educate learners on pedestrian safety measures, supporting the 365-day road safety programme.
Women’s Month Drive CSR Project 2023
The Siyazigabisa Community Centre, a non-governmental organisation and Home of Hope in Ekurhuleni, was recognised by the Department of Social Development for its commendable efforts in addressing various societal issues within the community, particularly those stemming from high unemployment and crime rates. The Centre provides shelter and support to abused women and abandoned young children from Tembisa and the surrounding informal settlements. Currently, it accommodates 50 women and children who are victims of domestic abuse and abandonment.
The RTMC visited the Centre to donate care hampers. These donations aimed to uplift and restore the dignity of the women and children who had sought refuge at the Home of Hope. In addition to providing material support, the event also served as an educational opportunity to inform beneficiaries about pedestrian safety and promote road safety measures.
Disaster Relief CSR Project 2023
The RTMC partnered with the Department of Transport to support the community of Mayflower following a tragic bus crash on February 25, 2024, on the R33 route near Dumbe. The bus was traveling from eThekwini in KwaZulu-Natal to the Mkhondo District Municipality. The accident resulted in the loss of eight lives, with many others critically injured.
Given the RTMC’s core mandate of road safety, the corporation took immediate action to assist the families affected by this disaster. The victims, who came from impoverished backgrounds and relied on social grants, faced significant financial burdens and distress due to the tragedy. As part of the disaster relief project, the RTMC and the Department of Transport provided essential support to these families.
The RTMC delivered grocery hampers to the eight bereaved families, offering a compassionate gesture to ease the burden of food costs associated with funeral arrangements and post-funeral livelihood needs arising from the bus disaster. This support aimed to alleviate some of the immediate financial pressures on the affected families, helping them navigate this difficult period.
